Pride of Guernsey - Angel of the Year
We have been a supporter of the Pride of Guernsey awards, Angel of the Year since it first launched and you can find out more about this year's Awards here
The winners of the 2019 Angel of the Year award were the hospital theatre staff who used their winnings to give their staffroom a makeover.
‘It was a complete shock to be nominated and then shortlisted and we never expected to win, as much of the work we do is behind closed doors and not in the public eye. We have more than 60 in the team, many of whom work shifts and so it would have been impossible to find a way of us using the very generous prize money in celebration and so I looked for a way of benefiting the whole team,’ said theatre manager Mary Carre.
‘The furniture in our staffroom had sadly seen better days and desperately needed to be replaced. The staffroom is an important place for us to relax during what are always busy shifts, often dealing with emergencies and complex operations. Officemaker was absolutely amazing in providing us with a generous discount and as sponsor of the Angel of the Year, Ravenscroft kindly offered to cover some extra chairs so that we could have matching furniture, which was all new. We are thrilled and it’s made a difference already.’
Editor of the Guernsey Press Shaun Green said that the Pride of Guernsey Awards were designed to recognise everyday people who make a real difference.
‘It’s always lovely to hear what winners have done with their prize money. The theatre staff were worthy winners as they help people who in most situations are completely unaware of what is happening around them,’ he said.
‘We are delighted that because of Pride of Guernsey that they now have new furniture and a nicer place to relax. The additional support from Officemaker and Ravenscroft is a great example of local companies coming together to recognise the difference the theatre staff make.’
